Taking ownership of a File or Folder in Windows 10

  1. Open File Explorer and then click on the File or Folder

  2. Right click on the File or Folder Properties in the Context Menu

      

  3. Click on the Security Tab

  4. Click on the Advanced Settings Button

      

  5. Click the Change link next to the "Owner:" Label

      

  6. Find the User Name

      

  7. Enter the User Name

      

  8. The first time seemed to only show the

  9. Retry entering the User Name into the Select User or Group Dialog until the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" CheckBox appears

      

  10. The object is now owned by the new User Name after a several minuter iteration through the Folder changing permissions
